Purpose
The goal of TheCall New York was to re-dig the wells of past revivals in New York, to launch another prayer meeting revival, and to contend for spiritual breakthroughs on school campuses.
Summary
In 1857, Jeremiah Lamphier hosted a noonday prayer meeting on Fulton Street in New York City. Only six people came. Despite the disappointing numbers, prayer continued. Two days later, the Bank of Philadelphia failed, and more began meeting daily. Within 6 months, 10,000 were gathering daily for prayer in New York City. Ultimately, thousands across the nations engaged in mass prayer meetings. Portland and Denver shut down business at noon because so many were praying. 1,000,000 people ended up being swept into the kingdom in what became known as “The Great Prayer Meeting Revival.” TheCall New York sought to re-dig the well of that past move of God, along with other New York revivals from the days of Charles Finney, A.B. Simpson and others.
Furthermore, in 1962 the infamous Supreme Court case Engel vs. Vitale challenged New York State’s right to have students participate in daily, volunteer prayer. In that landmark decision, 170 years of legal precedent was swept aside and volunteer prayer in schools was removed. The students of New York schools could no longer pray, “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence on you and beseech your blessings on us, our parents, our teachers and our nation.” In the very state where a worldwide prayer revival was birthed, America’s rejection of prayer in schools occurred. From TheCall New York came a cry for prayer to sweep the school campuses of America again.
Following TheCall New York, there were reports of kids boldly praying and preaching on their school campuses, even standing on tables during lunch breaks and preaching the gospel.
